Research summary
Tonsillitis is very common, affecting otherwise young and healthy individuals. Despite how common the disease is, the current guidelines are to NOT take a throat swab to assess the bugs that grow in the throat when people get tonsillitis. The presumption is that it's either a virus or caused by a bug called group A strep. However, tonsillitis is becoming much more common. The aim of this project is to take throat swabs of patients admitted to hospital with tonsillitis to assess the common bugs that are causing tonsillitis. We will also recruit a control group via posters in the Dental Hospital asking for volunteers.
