  • Research summary

Skin to skin contact (StSC) between an infant and carer has several beneficial effects. Early, regular and prolonged StSC as a unit-level strategy may decrease the risk of resistant bacterial colonisation in infants receiving neonatal intensive care, but this has not been investigated in a robust manner to date. When applied for its potential infection prevention and control (IPC) effects, it may therefore be beneficial to provide StSC to a wider range of infants than the preterm infants usually targeted. We aim to investigate such a strategy in the NeoDeco trial.
The NeoDeco Study is looking at optimising the practice of StSC contact between premature babies and their careers in neonatal care units. The Study will look at the impact the optimised practice of StSC contact may have on neonatal infection and sepsis occurrences, and the presence of harmful bacteria in infants admitted to Neonatal units. NeoDeco is a multi-centre trial, with 24 hospital (Neonatal Units) sites from 5 countries .
NeoDeco is pragmatic, multicentre, parallel cluster randomised hybrid implementation-effectiveness Study. The Study will last a total of 17 months including a baseline, wash-in and intervention Period.
