Research summary
The aim of the study is to explore lay understandings of acceptance in the context of chronic pain. Participants will be individuals diagnosed with chronic pain, discharged from a pain management service. The service provides multi-disciplinary pain management input. Psychological models of pain management include a theoretical understanding of acceptance as a potential component of recovery. This theory may be operationalised formally or less formally by professionals as an aspect of client’s treatment in the service. However, although the concept of acceptance is a component in the models employed by professionals, clients may have a different way of conceptualising and operationalising it in their own life. The study seeks to explore, describe and discover the meaning, experience and process of acceptance from the perspective of those experiencing chronic pain. The researcher will carry out semi-structured interviews lasting about one hour with ten to fifteen participants who are within one month of being discharged from the service. Interviews will be transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. The research will be written up as part of a doctorate thesis.
