Research summary
This project aims to develop and test a home based personalised eight-week support programme to improve medicines management for people with mild-moderate dementia living at home with and without family carers. The programme will promote active patient and carer involvement, enhancing knowledge and skills in medicines management. Patients and family carers will benefit through shaping the research. Should the intervention be successful, there is potential to improve their quality of life and health.
Design and methods used:
Phase 1: Identify how people with mild-moderate dementia with and without family carers manage medicines through interviews, photos, written accounts and conversations. Interviews with health and social care professionals will be carried out. The interviews will help us learn what strategies people apply, and how professionals support these strategies.
Phase 2: Co-designing a support programme with people with
mild-moderate dementia, family carers and health/social care professionals. We will hold a series of workshops to develop the programme, with discussions on the Phase 1 evidence, and identify potential methods of support for medicines management.
Phase 3: (Additional ethics will be applied for later to cover this phase of work, however it is included here for fullness). A test to ensure the support programme is acceptable and feasible. We will recruit people with mild-moderate dementia with and without family carers to try the programme. They will be observed, complete questionnaires and interviews.REC name
