Data collection arrangements
Tissue, blood and other biological samples will be stored in the Liverpool Tissue Bank, in the Division of Pathology, part of the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine at the University of Liverpool. Relevant clinical data relating to the patient will also be collected from a variety of sources and will be securely stored within the Tissue Bank on a password protected Trust database. Only Tissue Bank staff will have access to the database and are responsible for maintaining and updating the database. All samples will be coded with a unique identifier and only the Tissue Bank will be able to link samples with a specific Tissue Bank number to an individual donor.
Potential donors will be first approached while they are attending scheduled outpatient clinic appointments or inpatient admissions by a member of the clinical care team directly involved in the patient's care. The patient will be given a patient information leaflet and consent form describing the Tissue Bank and what donation would involve. If the patient agrees to consent to donate tissue, a sample will be taken which is surplus to diagnostic requirements and transferred to the Tissue Bank for processing and storage.
Research programme
The Tissue Bank supports a large research community within the University but is also open to outside academic and some commercial organisations. Most research relates to the understanding, diagnosis of and treatment of cancer. Access to samples is only possible after thorough review by ethical and research committees.
