Research summary
This study aims to investigate the impact of tooth agenesis (hypodontia) on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in adults and compare it to a control.
The tooth agenesis participants will be recruited at orthodontic-restorative joint clinics at Birmingham Dental Hospital and these participants will be asked to bring a friend or colleague of the same gender and similar age who will be their ’friend control’. Non-English speakers, those with cleft lip and palate, craniofacial syndromes, syndromic tooth agenesis and complex medical histories will be excluded, as will those who are currently undergoing or have previously had extensive orthodontic or restorative dental treatment.
Socio-demographic data and clinical data will be taken. OHRQoL will be assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile 49 question (OHIP-49) questionnaire. Total OHIP-49 score, domain scores and individual question scores will be compared between tooth agenesis and control groups using appropriate statistical tests. Regression analysis will be used to look for associations between socio-demographic and clinical data with OHIP scores.
