  • Research summary

This study is designed to develop a questionnaire on eating related quality of life of children aged 11-16 years with different types of orthodontic appliances (braces that are used for correction of irregularities of teeth and jaws). In the future this questionnaire will be used as an instrument for data collection from a larger multicultural sample. The age of participants in the study is 11-16 years old, which is regarded as the best age for starting treatment, so this age range represents the majority of patients who seek this treatment.
The content of the questionnaire will be derived from a previous qualitative study in this field. The questionnaire has been reviewed by the supervisory team for clarity and design. Content Validity has been verified by discussion with specialist orthodontists. Patients will be recruited from the department of Child Dental Health (Orthodontic Department) Newcastle Dental Hospital to further develop the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. The face validity procedure will consist of face-to-face interviews with 10-15 children about the clarity, style and comprehension of the questions. For reliability testing 30 patients will be recruited and the questionnaire will be tested on two different occasions. Firstly during their normal visit to the orthodontist and they will be asked to complete questionnaire and two weeks later the same questionnaire will be posted to their home and they will be asked to complete it again and return it to the researcher.
