  • Research summary

Qualitative and quantitative study of UK Paediatric Cardiology Trainees and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their training.
The format will be an internet survey that will aim to explore the direct impact on training, as well as the personal, emotional and financial impact on trainees.
Quantitative interviews will be conducted with a cohort of trainees from various levels of training, different ages, sexes and ethnic backgrounds. Qualitative interviews will explore the impact of the pandemic on training, the impact on the trainee, the perceived impact on the future and any positive changes (to training and/or personal life) that have come from the pandemic.
Phenomenological analysis will then be applied to the interview transcripts by two separate analysts, as well as a reflective review by trainees of the interview transcripts themselves. This will be used to identify any common themes (e.g. alienation and affinity, disruption and stasis, and vulnerability and strength). The themes will be further explored and compared to the current academic literature during the COVID-19 pandemic.
