Research summary
There has been little work undertaken which has studied the natural history and pathogenesis of Neurosarcoidosis. This work forms part of a series of investigations which studies clinical, immunological and pathological aspects of the disorder, with a view to attaining a greatly more clear understanding of the disease, its management, treatment and prognosis. The Centre for Neurosarcoidosis at the Royal Free Hospital has over 200 patients with the disease, seemingly the largest cohort in the world. This project will investigate the neuropathology and, using modern immunohistochemical staining techniques, how neurological involvement in the disease occurs and how severe it may become.Existing samples of previously acquired brain tissue at diagnostic biopsy which are stored in our Neuropathology departments will be stained and examined microscopically for a series of immunological measurements, as well a standard measure of inflammation and cell loss. The results will be correlated with the disease course, imaging characteristics and subsequent response to treatment.\nThe data may help to reconfigure optimum treatment for the different subtypes of the disease, and will be used to begin further multicentre controlled treatment trials.
