Research summary
In the EU about 4 million people die each year from a chronic illness. Many of these people die in pain or distress and care for dying patients and their family is often sub optimal.
The way we care for dying patients is an indicator of how, as a society, we care for all sick and vulnerable people. Adequate and compassionate care of dying patients is fundamental to human dignity and is a basic human right.
An international research collaboration is underway, funded by an EU H2020 research grant. This study is an 11 country Cohort Study called the iLIVE Project. The aim of the iLIVE cohort study is to contribute to high-quality personalised care at the end of life by:
1. Providing in-depth understanding of the concerns, expectations and preferences of dying patients and their formal and informal caregivers;
2. Understanding the cultural, gender, age and socio-economic difference in these
concerns expectations and preferences.This study is an EU collaboration, of which this application for the UK part of the project.
