  • Research summary

    THE CLINICAL PROBLEM
Inflammatory arthritis refers to conditions causing joint pain and swelling. The commonest conditions are “rheumatoid arthritis” and “psoriatic arthritis”.

Patient-reported outcome measures (called “PROMs”) are questionnaires that can assess how active a patient’s arthritis is, and its impact on their lives. They can be used to better understand the effects arthritis has on peoples’ lives, informing their healthcare.

The Haywood Rheumatology Team have developed an online system called the “Haywood Arthritis Portal”. This allows patients with inflammatory arthritis to complete PROMs online. Patients are asked to complete this before their appointment. Patients unable to do so can complete a short version on “tablets” in clinic. The information they enter is used by their healthcare professional to support their care.

The important first step in using online PROMs to improve patient care is to understand what patients and healthcare professionals think of them. The Haywood Arthritis Portal Study will do this, by answering several questions including:

    1. What makes a patient less likely to complete the Haywood Arthritis Portal at home?

    2. What do patients think of answering online questions about their health?

    3. Do healthcare professionals find PROMs helpful?

    WHAT THE RESEARCH INVOLVES
    The study has two parts.

First, patients and healthcare professionals using the Portal will be asked to complete a short questionnaire to understand their views on online PROMs and the Portal. Patients preferring not to use the Portal will be asked to complete a similar questionnaire, that also asks why they preferred to not use it.

Second, some patients and healthcare professionals completing the questionnaire will be invited to take part in an interview to explore their views on online PROMs and the Portal in more detail.

WHERE THE RESEARCH WILL TAKE PLACE
Patients will be told about the study at their rheumatology appointments.
