Research summary
This study aims to obtain blood, urine and saliva samples from patients of any age with glomerulonephritis as they are a group of patients at high risk of future chronic kidney disease and poor cardiovascular health. It will obtain biological samples at 2 time points (diagnosis and 12 months) and will collect single time point samples from a group of patients who are considered healthy and from patients with kidney disease that is not due to glomerulonephritis. It will use technology called Lipidomics to accurately map out the different molecules within the samples. This will allow the researchers to identify the most important molecules that may be causing inflammation and damaging the heart or kidneys that will lead to further studies and potential therapeutic targets. It will ask permission to store left over samples for future studies and for permission to access kidney biopsy tissue in the future. The study is funded by the The Wellcome Trust-University of Liverpool Institutional Translational Partnership (ITPA), Translational Research Access Programme (TRAP). Recruitment will take place at NHS hospitals; Alder Hey Children’s hospital and Liverpool University hospitals NHS trust. The study is expected to last two years in total.
