Research summary
Individuals with a visible difference, such as scarring from a burn injury, can experience significant levels of appearance-related distress, which can result in problems such as anxiety or social avoidance. YP Face IT is an online support programme designed to target these issues in young people ages 12-17. Young people are asked to complete 7-weekly sessions, one per week, lasting around 45-60 minutes and containing different activities and exercises. Six weeks after the final session they are asked to complete a ‘booster quiz’ to reinforce the skills they have learnt over the sessions. The current study aims to discover whether YP Face IT is a feasible intervention for young people with a burn injury being treated within secondary care. Clinical psychologists will be asked to identify patients who they think may benefit from YP Face IT, and will then supervise the patients as they complete the programme. Young people will complete outcome measures before and after the programme, to explore response rates. Young people, parents and Health Professionals will also be interviewed after completion of the programme to discuss their experiences of YP Face IT and determine the feasibility of the programme within this population.
