  • Research summary

BME staff has been found to experience more challenges achieving senior management/Executive positions in the NHS contrary to white colleagues (Wyatt and Silvester, 2015). The office of National statistics (ONS, 2013a) revealed that although the BME make up 12.4% of the UK workforce, 5 % of these are senior managers.Given the rise in diversity of workforce, the differences in career progression between the BME and their white colleagues is very concerning.

The British and Minority Ethnic (BME) study explores the lived experiences of career progression of BME staff currently in senior and Very Senior Management (Executives, Board level) positions in the NHS Trusts in the South West of England Region and Greater London. The BME staffs includes qualified nurses & midwives, Allied Health Professionals and those with a social work background.
The research examines their lived experiences of career progression in the NHS. It builds on previous studies into the experiences of BME that have successfully reached senior and very senior management roles. It builds on experiences of overseas nurses working in UK healthcare services focusing on the implications of its findings for BME nurses and midwives and BME managers. It is hoped that the findings will inspire BME workforce to progress to senior leadership positions and portray positive image of the BME leaders because progression of BME to senior leadership remains slow (Shaw, 2010).
