  • Research summary

This qualitative study aims to understand more about what it is like to become a mother as a woman with perinatally acquired HIV, about which there is currently very little research. The study aims to provide a unique perspective on how perinatal HIV-related stressors, for example disclosure and illness stigma, interact with family relationships and the experience of mothering, to gain a better understanding of the psychosocial dynamics in the perinatally acquired HIV population. The results may inform interventions to assist HIV positive mothers, may improve maternal health outcomes such as a healthy maternal-infant attachment, and improve the general well-being of the mother. The findings may potentially be used to contribute to guidelines and interventions around the psychosocial care of HIV mothers and help consider evidence- based guidelines for the management of pregnancies and postpartum care.

The study will use a cross-sectional, qualitative design with a semi-structured in-depth interview. 8 mothers with perinatally acquired HIV will be recruited from three sites (two NHS settings and one HIV charity setting) who will be responsible for looking after the health and wellbeing of such women. The interview will last between 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes and will take place in a private room in the medical setting. All participants will give their consent to take part in this study.

Participants will be asked to share their experience of growing up with HIV, disclosure and the impact of their status on their parenting experience. A Grounded Theory approach will be used to analyse the data.
