Research summary
A core aim of the NHS is to reduce health inequalities, including through addressing barriers to accessing timely healthcare. Certain groups of children and young people (CYP) living in the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) present late to paediatric critical care and surgery services resulting in poorer clinical outcomes, suggesting inequitable access. However, the factors influencing access to such services are presently unclear. This study will use multiple qualitative methods, including interviews, focus groups and creative group work, to understand inequitable access to paediatric critical care and surgery for CYP from diverse backgrounds across the NENC. The research will explore the views and experiences of CYP; their caregivers; healthcare staff and voluntary, charity, social enterprise and community workers so that barriers can be understood and recommendations for service improvement can be developed.
