  • Research summary

As a RISE Eating Disorder service, we are looking to deliver an online Binge Eating Disorder (BED) group intervention to assess its efficacy in improving patient outcomes. The National Institute for Care Excellence Guidelines (NICE, 2017) support the delivery of a group intervention as an acceptable treatment option for BED in adolescents. Even so, there is a paucity of research in the field (Downey, 2014), and in particular in the under eighteen age group. Group interventions provide a safe place where the participants might feel that they are not alone in their struggles. This is likely to have a positive impact on recovery (Yalom & Leszcz, 2021). As a service at CWPT, we currently use the Overcoming Binge Eating book by Dr Christopher Fairburn (2013) as a Guided Self-Help intervention for individuals. For the purposes of this research we adapted this protocol to a group format for under 18s. An example is when assessing aspects of 'work' experiences, this has been adapted to 'school' experiences. The RISE service at CWPT has seen a increase in BED referrals and consequently a rise in the number of individuals on a waiting list. It has been shown that the earlier a service intervenes, the better the outcome (Allen et al. 2020). The aim of this research project is to evaluate the efficacy of a BED group intervention. The aim is to offer a 10-week group for up to 6 individuals from the RISE Eating Disorders Service waiting list. We will evaluate this quantitively through pre and post assessments and qualitatively by providing participants with the opportunity to comment on their experience of the group through a feedback form post group intervention completion.
