Research summary
The study will involve asking consented patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) to have an electrocardiogram (ECG) before and during self-pulse palpation of their radial pulse to observe if self-pulse palpation regulates the rhythm of the heart in these patients. The patients will initially be consented and then answer a questionnaire to establish the nature of their AF, any other medical problems and a simple drug history. We will need to know the age and sex of the patients in addition to this. After the questionnaire, they will undergo a quick and noninvasive single-lead ECG to establish the rhythm before and during self-palpation. The ECG will be analysed to determine the regularity of the heart rhythm both during self-pulse palpation and the reference rhythm taken before palpation.
