Research summary
This study looks to investigate the most appropriate method in which to conduct a research trial for the effectiveness of Korean Hand Acupuncture (KHA) on pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain (PPGP). Phase 1 gained ethical approval from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences Research Ethics Review Panel, (ref number RE-HLS-HLS-12-300513), and was completed in September 2013 and is NOT for NRES review. The aim was to produce a valid and reliable placebo KHA method (involving healthy students). Phase 2 aims to investigate the views of people with PPGP to find what is important to them in a treatment approach, achieved through 8-12 individual semi structured interviews.
Phase 3 will be a feasibility study, with a standard physiotherapy arm, a standard physiotherapy plus placebo KHA arm, and a standard physiotherapy plus true KHA arm. The aim is to test the feasibility and acceptability of the study design and protocol, evaluating the integrity of the study protocol (e.g. recruitment, retention rates, outcome measurement)to inform a potential future fully powered RCT. In addition, any data trends will be recorded.REC name
