Research summary
Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with the lung disease called COPD, over and above the effect of smoking which is common to both. This may be due to inflammation in either the airways or in the circulation. Current therapy for COPD addresses the breathlessness but new treatments need to address the cardiovascular risk. We wish to explore the role of the drug - simvastatin, which is known to lower cholesterol but which may also reduce risk in those with a normal lipid level.
