Research summary
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is becoming a major problem as obesity rates increase because it can progress to serious liver disease. There is no established treatment apart from encouraging weight loss which has not proved widely effective. Omega-3, a substance naturally found in fish oil, and of benefit in heart disease, has shown initial promise in improving the amount of fat stored in the liver as well as liver function. This study tests this in a double-blind placebo-controlled, randomised trial.
