  • Research summary

Exercise while on dialysis has been shown to have multifaceted benefit for CKD patients. Part of these benefits come from the fact that blood within the body is move from the central compartment out towards the muscles at the extremity. This movement of blood and subsequent vasodilation in the muscle causes a ‘washing’ effect of the cells within the muscle thus removing more waste products which can be removed by the dialyser. CKD patients also often suffer from chronic inflammation, it is believed that one of the causes of this inflammation is endotoxemia. Studies in healthy populations have shown that intense exercise can increases the level of endotoxemia. Therefore the aim of this study is to see if the amount of exercise typically completed by a CKD patient during dialysis, has the effect of increasing the level of endotoxins in their blood.

CKD patients that are on dialysis and are accustomed to exercise on dialysis shall be recruited from Lister hospital and its surrounding satellite units. The patient’s will be monitored on 2 separate occasions; 1) they shall be asked to exercise at their usual intensity, and 2) they will be asked to abstain from exercising. The order in which the patients exercise or abstain shall be kept the same for all participants. On both occasions bloods to measure endotoxemic levels shall be taken pre-dialysis, immediately post-dialysis and 2 to 3 hours post dialysis. Pre and immediately-Post dialysis bloods shall be taken from the arterial line on the dialysis machine at the patient’s usual dialysis unit, the post-2 to 3 hours blood shall be taken from the patient either within the dialysis unit if they have not gone home, or taken at their home as a house visit.
