  • Research summary

The effect of exercise treatment on the rehabilitation of stroke patients.
Participants who have suffered an ischemic stroke within the last 6 months and are aged 18-75 years. The aim of this study is to examine the effects that exercise therapy either group or individual influences the rehabilitation of stroke patients, their functioning and their psychological wellbeing. This is to establish how useful exercise therapy is as an intervention and how efficient it is in ensuring patients have a successful recovery. This is examining whether one form of exercise therapy is more beneficial than the other which is why two forms are being investigated (group vs one-to-one). This is because exercise therapy is widely used in the rehabilitation of stroke patients so this study is to see how efficient this therapy actually is, in providing a chance for a successful recovery and better quality of life. Investigating this is because it has been proven in previous studies that stroke patients tend to have a poorer quality of life due to suffering from other illnesses which are often a result of not having efficient and regular physiotherapy, allowing them to recover properly from their stroke. The current literature lacks comparison of exercise delivery. This will be conducted for a 12 week period whereby patients will conduct their usual physiotherapy sessions.
No treatment will be administered by the researcher. The researcher will simply be collecting data via two questionnaires that are in conjunction with their physiotherapy sessions. No personal data will be used. Data collection from two questionnaires which are given to the patients in their physiotherapy sessions. The patients physiotherapy treatment will continue as normal.
    No funding will be required.
Participants will be recruited from NHS hospital whereby they are carrying out their physiotherapy sessions.
It is a quantitative, retrospective cohort study design.
