Research summary
Patients with obesity face greater risk of infection of coronavirus (COVID-19), and suffering poorer outcomes in development and prognosis of pneumonia. The Tier 3 Specialist Weight Assessment and Management Service (SWAMS) deliver psychological-led behavioural support for weight management to patients with complex obesity in South East England. Psychological support during this time is vital as patients are considerably fearful of becoming seriously unwell and some people have limited sources of food. In response to the COVID-19 lockdown, SWAMS have adapted service delivery by operating remote multidisciplinary clinics through a digital platform to ensure patients feel supported in managing their mental health, eating behaviour and physical activity during this crisis.
This cross-sectional survey study aims to investigate the prevalence and symptomatology of COVID-19, along with the impact the lockdown has had on psychological wellbeing, eating behaviour and physical activity levels of Tier 3 service patient populations.
