Research summary
Aloe Vera juice is sold worldwide (including within the UK) as a food product, however in some countries it is listed as a food supplement and is therefore subject to additional scrutiny before it can be sold in these markets. There have been rare cases whereby Aloe Vera products have caused deranged liver function, which returned to normal when the patient stopped using the product. This study aims to measure if a specific aloe vera juice product, that is already sold within the UK, has any impact on liver function. Participants will be asked to consume 120 ml of Aloe Vera Juice per day (60 ml morning, 60 ml evening) for 60 days. Their liver function and structure is checked at baseline, day 30, and day 60. A further potential day 90 visit is added in the event that someone has deranged liver function tests at the day 60 visit that requires follow-up.
