Research summary
Currently, plasma metanephrines is analysed using ELISA technique and it involves a lot of hands-on preparation. It is an assay consisting of two stages with an 18-20 hours incubation time in between each stage. This then leads to a turn around time (TAT) of 14 days. My aim is to develop a new in-house assay for plasma metanephrines which uses the LC-MS/MS method which will act as a service improvement project. This will lead to reduction of Trust cost as the kits required are less expensive than currently being used. Assay quality will also be increased as there will be less hands-on preparation which will reduce potential errors occurring. Finally, immunoassays can be prone to interference from cross-reacting compounds leading to inaccurate results and subsequent mis-diagnosis. All the work for this project will be carried out in the Biochemistry laboratory at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
