  • Research summary

Dietary restraint is a common feature of eating disorders. Calorie counting is one aspect of dietary restraint very commonly practiced by patients with eating disorders. Treatment manuals recommend that patients learn not to count calories in order to manage their health and eating disorder. Despite this guidance, many patients continue to count calories and regard this as helpful. There has been little research into the extent and nature of calorie counting, and to date there is no specific validated measure of this unhelpful behaviour, although there are more general measures of dietary restraint. The current research proposes to validate a measure of calorie counting behaviours for use with patients with eating disorders.
