Research summary
Diabetes is a condition that is on the rise and is considered a serious health concern globally, namely due to it’s many complications. This includes complications with the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart. \n\nAll persons with diabetes are required to have their eyes checked once a year for any diabetic changes as diabetes can affect the vessels at the back of the eye and this can lead to blindness. This is done by taking pictures of the back of the eye using digital fundus photography. \n\nImages taken on fundus photography can fall victim to technical failure when a patient presents with media opacities such as cataract for example. This results in the patient being referred into the hospital eye clinic which is already heavily burdened. The optos camera is said to be able to successfully get through cataracts and other lens media opacities with ease and it also captures a wider field of view of the back of the eye. This study is aiming to see if the optos imaging modality can perform just as well as the gold standard slit lamp biomicroscopy and potentially serve as a better tool for capturing images of patients eyes within the diabetic eye screening programme. \n
