Research summary
The BREAST-Q is a well-established patient reported outcome measure(PROM) developed and validated to measure satisfaction and quality of life among breast surgery patients. The objective of this study is to field-test 2 new BREAST-Q scales developed for patients having breast reconstruction using latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle flaps (muscle taken from the back area). These 2 scales were developed to evaluate physical symptoms and changes in appearance of the back area that may result from this surgery. Once tested, these new scales will form a new LD-specific module of the BREAST-Q. A sample of 300 NHS patients who have had breast reconstruction surgery with LD flaps in the past five years will be asked to complete the scales. Patients will receive the new LD scales along with 4 other core BREAST-Q scales (satisfaction with breast, psychosocial well-being, sexual well-being and physical well-being of the chest) by mail. They will also receive up to 2 mailed follow-up reminders to ensure a high response rate. Patient responses to the questions will be analyzed to determine the best questions to include in the final version of each scale (item reduction) and to report on the acceptable, reliable and validity of the new scales (psychometric validation).
