  • Research summary

Study Title\t\nOptimising opioids use in chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP) patients, Healthcare professionals and patients’ perspectives of barriers and enablers to the appropriate use of prescribed opioids in CNMP patients’ management using Theoretical Domain Framework\nShort title\nThe barriers and enablers of safe use and prescribing of opioids in CNMP management\t\nStudy Design\t\nThis research will utilise a qualitative study design based on semi-structured interviews and will take place in three phases.\n In Phase 1, we will identify barriers and enablers to appropriate prescribing of opioids for chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP) management by healthcare providers. \nIn Phase 2, we will identify barriers and enablers to appropriate use of prescribed opioids among chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP) patients. \nPhases 1 & 2 will include: key informant semi- structured interviews with healthcare providers and patients using an interview guide, informed by the theoretical domains framework.\nThese two phases will lead us to the next phase which is \nPhase 3: intervention mapping to develop a theory-based intervention to optimise medication use in CNMP \n\nStudy Participants\t\n1.\tAll chronic pain clinic staff at the Birmingham Treatment Centre.\n2.\tCNMP patients from Birmingham Treatment Centre who are at risk of misusing opioids. In order to identify these patients, we will use the Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM). \n\nPlanned size of recruitment target\t\nThe chronic pain clinic healthcare providers numbers around 12 people and we aim to interview all of them. \nWe aim to interview between 10-30 CNMP patients who are at moderate to high risk of misusing opioids from the Birmingham Treatment Centre.\nFollow up duration\t\nThe participants will be interviewed only once and there will be no follow up. \nPlanned Study Period\t\n3-6 months after obtaining ethical approval \nResearch Aim(s)\nAim\nThe aim of the research is to develop an intervention to optimise long term use of opioids in CNMP management.\nObjectives\n\tTo identify, understand and describe health care providers’ (healthcare providers at the pain clinic at Birmingham Treatment Centre) beliefs and attitudes about appropriate opioid prescribing and their perceptions of the multi-level factors that influence this behaviour. \n\tTo identify, understand and describe beliefs and attitudes of CNMP patients (who are at moderate to high risk of opioid misuse) about appropriate use of prescribed opioids and their perceptions of the multi-level factors that influence their behaviour. \n
