• Research summary

  It is sometimes difficult to differentiate the changes that occur after prolonged sports training from the changes that occur in certain heart diseases, especially hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is important as strenous physical exertion in cardiomyopathy can cause serious harm and even death.
  We hope that by applying emerging technologies in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging we will be able to develop techniques that will answer this question without requiring individuals to ’detrain’ for six months - something that both professional and keen amateur sportsmen and women find unpleasant.
