  • Research summary

Here, we present an observational case-control study to investigate the effect of past and current smoking on hospitalisation with an initial or subsequent diagnosis of COVID-19 at a single UK hospital site when compared with influenza like illness (ILI) and lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) admissions a year previous. This study is expected to be a small step towards understanding the role of smoking in severe cases of COVID-19. Comparing the hospitalisation rate of smokers during the COVID-19 pandemic with the hospitalisation rate a year previous for other respiratory infections will allow us to examine whether the risk of hospitalisation in current and ex-smokers during the COVID-19 pandemic is equivalent to the year previous.
