Research summary
The proposed study will use retrospective accounts to explore how individuals with alcohol dependence experienced alcohol detoxification in a general psychiatric unit within the NHS. The research is to consider the lived experience of medical alcohol withdrawal (alcohol detoxification).
There is a dearth of published literature on the recovering alcoholic’s experience of detoxification (Greenwood and Farmer, 2000). As alcohol misuse is a growing problem and the number of those with long term alcohol dependence increases. All interventions (including the recovery model) are under increasing scrutiny in the current economic climate. Often budget holders want to see tangible results in order to justify resources. The purpose of the study is to consider the “lived” experience directly from this specific group of individuals. The proposed study allows the voices of a relatively marginalised group to be heard. Their views and experiences will be explored to provide a greater understanding of this group and to inform services by offering a fuller understanding of the psychological dimensions of the process.
The research objectives:
1. Explore how individuals with alcohol dependence perceive and experience alcohol detoxification.
2. Explore the thoughts and feelings associated with the detoxification process.
3. Explore the relationships between participants attending alcohol detoxification processes and individual trigger mechanisms.
4. Identify changes to psychological well-being since the alcohol detoxification.REC name
