  • Research summary

I intend to undertake in-depth, hour-long, semi-structured interviews with approximately 20 LGBTQ+ migrants to London, recruited from multiple NHS sites, incorporating around 10 individuals who were “out” prior to relocating, and 10 who were not. I intend to interview them firstly at the time of recruitment and then again three-12 months later. The purpose of these interviews will be to determine the extent to which the sexual healthcare experiences of migrants who were "out" prior to their migration differ from those whose sexuality shifted following their relocation. The research questions will be:
    1. (How) do the experiences of queer migrants who were already out prior to their migration differ to those whose sexual identities changed over the course of the migratory process?
    2. Do the two groups require two different sets of sexual health interventions? And, if not, does an alternative set of categories requiring different clinical interventions emerge from the data?

Patient and public involvement is very important to my project. Patients and the public will be consulted before the interview phase begins on interview structure and materials (information sheet, topic guide etc.). Health and migrant advocacy networks will also be key to the dissemination of my research findings.
