Research summary
This study aims to improve patients’ experience during upper GI endoscopy which is poorly tolerated by many patients. Trans-nasal endoscopy (TNE) offers an alternative to the conventional per-oral endoscopy and has been shown to be more tolerated and less expensive. During our consultation with the patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) group, patients expressed their interest in having an alternative less-invasive test such as TNE. However, there is currently a knowledge gap regarding the accuracy of biopsies obtained through a small calibre biopsy forceps for the diagnosis of coeliac disease. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap, which can impact clinical practice, by offering patients with suspected coeliac disease a readily available alternative to the conventional, poorly tolerated per-oral endoscopy.
