  • Research summary

There has been a vast amount of research in the field of psychological interventions primarily in the efficacy of Cognitive behavioural Therapy (CBT), for a range of severe mental health disorders. Technological advances in healthcare have also shown promise when delivering health interventions for mental health problems. The project will look to develop a technology based, mobile intervention for people with psychosis. The current project will be developed with service user involvement; participants will be prompted through a mobile phone based application with a series of questions which will assess their symptoms. The system will respond with a guided self-help based psychological intervention with the aim of reducing their symptoms. The project will hope to recruit 16 service users and 8-10 health professionals working in the Early Intervention Service to take part in the project, which will be conducted in the Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust Early Intervention Service. Potential participants will be approached by their clinical care team, to see if they would like to take part in the project and if they meet the criteria for the project. In the first phase of the study we will invite people to discuss their experience of psychosis and give their opinions on the existing evidence based treatment (CBT) and how the mobile app can be developed. In the second phase we will complete a test run with a small number of participants to refine the mobile intervention (TechCare). In the third and the final phase of the study the TechCare app will be examined in a group of 12 participants to see what they think of the intervention. The intervention will last for a period of 6 weeks, with the findings of this project being used to design a future randomised controlled trial.
