Data collection arrangements
The research project will capture clinical data, such as details about their stroke and any patient risk factors; related treatments and tests (such as angiograms and MRIs) at hospital prior to thrombectomy; the thrombectomy procedure itself (e.g. equipment used); and short-term treatment outcomes. No identity data will be collected until consent has been provided.
Following the procedure they or a relative will be asked to consent (if appropriate) and, if granted, follow-up questionnaires will be sent to the patient to monitor the longer-term benefits of the procedure.
Data will be obtained from NHS staff, clinical systems and notes, and directly from patients, either in person or via online questionnaires.
Research programme
People that have had a procedure called a ‘thrombectomy’ that aims to remove the clot in the brain that has caused the stroke. Most research in this area has been into the safety of and effectiveness of the procedure itself during the clinical trial for the process. We aim to use real world data to capture longer-term ongoing information about the thrombectomy procedure - helping patients and relatives be better informed and providing clinicians further evidence on the procedure and its outcomes. We also aim to capture ongoing data directly from patients helping us look into the longer term impacts of the procedure, not only providing more information to patients, clinicians and relatives but also to the NHS and funders on the cost effectiveness of the procedure and its ongoing impact. This will benefit other researchers and academics.
