Research summary
Heart failure is a condition where the heart has its ability to pump blood around the body reduced. The muscular walls of heart are not pumping efficiently enough to meet the demands of the body. Heart failure can cause symptoms such as, but not limited to, shortness of breath, dizziness and ankle swelling.
Heart failure is a common condition and often occurs in older patients. A person's risk of having heart failure can be increased if patients have conditions such as coronary artery disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
TARTAN-HF aims to investigate a new strategy of detecting heart failure in patients with diabetes who have at least one other risk factor for developing heart failure already.
The new strategy involves taking a 'biomarker' blood test to identify patients who might have heart failure and then those patients come for an echocardiogram scan to look at their heart.
We will compare this strategy to current practice to see if it can increase the rate of heart failure diagnosis. This will allow patients to be placed on treatment faster, hopefully reducing their risk of admission to hospital or death from heart failure.
