  • Research summary

In hospital, everyday tasks such as washing and dressing, going to the toilet, and even eating can be more difficult, especially for older people. This can be due to the layout of the ward, the way staff and patients interact or medical conditions and/or treatments. Falls, incontinence and becoming confused are common for older people in hospital and can add to the problem. Sometimes people need more help with tasks in hospital, and this need may continue once they are back at home.\n\nWe want to develop and introduce a new way of working on hospital wards looking after older people to reduce each person’s chance of losing independence (or becoming more dependent) during their hospital stay.\n\nThe study described in this application details development work to identify the content of the novel system of care. We plan apply for further funding to develop and test the system of care for feasibility and efficacy in a future programme of work. \n\nFrom published research we have already identified factors contributing to falls, confusion, incontinence, poor mobility and loss of function in hospital. We will speak with people who have recently been discharged from hospital, and staff on the wards to find any additional factors. We will look at previous research (via a systematic review) and hold workshops with patients and experts to identify ways to target these risk factors and reduce the chance of older people losing independence in hospital.\n
