Research summary
It is critical that all patients have access to research and clinical trial opportunities to ensure that the population of patients taking part in research is representative of the diverse population we serve. This enables information from trials such as toxicity and patient outcomes to be relevant to all. Recruitment of patients from ethnic minority backgrounds to any research studies is acknowledged to be challenging and as a result they are often underrepresented in trials.
To begin to explore these disparities and identify potential barriers and strategies to overcome these, we propose an initially targeted approach within our South Asian majority population. There is a real opportunity to improve this situation and, in doing so, we need to understand why this low participation rate exists.
