Research summary
Sleep disturbance is common and can have harmful psychological and physical effects. People with a learning disability are at a particularly high risk. Information will be collected using two separate surveys, one for family carers of adults with Down’s syndrome (DS) (aged 16 years and over) and the other for adults with DS (aged 16 years and over). The research aims to describe the range of sleep disorders in adults with DS and how common they are from the perspective of family carers and explore associations between sleep disorders and medical and psychological conditions. The experiences of family carers in dealing with sleep disorders will also be explored. In addition, information from adults with DS themselves will be obtained. It is hoped the findings will help highlight the importance of sleep disorders in adults with DS for clinical practice and further research.
