Research summary
This study, carried out by a medical student at Cardiff University, is an online questionnaire survey of general practitioners (GPs) in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CAV UHB) which quantifies their education of sleep medicine and assesses their awareness of sleep disorders.
Sleep disorders are varied, highly prevalent and a significant negative impact for the individual and for society in terms of health, productivity and avoidable deaths due to driving accidents.
Sleep medicine is not recognised as a separate medical speciality by the General Medical Council and previous studies have shown that very little time is dedicated to sleep and sleep disorders during medical education in the UK. In many parts of the UK, particularly in Wales, provision of sleep services is poor.
This study aims to clarify how much training General Practitioners have in sleep medicine and assess their awareness of major sleep disorders.
It is hoped the results of this study can be used to inform future medical education, to equip doctors with the necessary skills to identify and treat sleep disorders.
