  • Research summary

Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the small joints of the hand and may result in significant pain, functional loss and social impairment. The current treatment modalities involve physiotherapy, medication, injections and surgery - all of which carry specific and significant risks, including amputation. We have conceptualised a supportive tape which is easily applied to the finger to potentially improve symptoms in a risk-free fashion. This is a two-group parallel placebo controlled randomised trial of supportive tape for painful finger joints. We will measure pain daily and quantify hand function each week, for a total of 3 weeks, comparing the outcomes between groups.
