Research summary
This study aims to examine the complexities of the transition process for autistic young people with high support needs as they move out of school and into adulthood, by considering the experiences of young people themselves, combined with the perspectives of the multiple stakeholders who make decisions on their behalf. The study will adopt a longitudinal case study approach over an 18 month period, across multiple settings. In so doing, it is hoped this work will have both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, by closely examining the relationships between stakeholders, the study will contribute to the debates around autonomy, decision-making capacity and (inter) dependence. Practically, by chronicling the transition journey, good practice will be highlighted, as well as meaningful ways in which the current provision could be improved.
