ETHICAL APPROVAL IS ONLY REQUIRED FOR WORKPACKAGE 1

This is a four-part implementation study aimed at supporting staff in social care for the elderly during the COVID19 pandemic. It is jointly funded by NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent Surrey Sussex (ARCKSS), the University of Sussex, and the Kent Surrey and Sussex Clinical Research Network (CRN).
    There are four workpackages:
    • Workpackage 1: Qualitative and ethnographic study exploring the working lives and practices of social care staff working in care homes and domiciliary care.
    • Workpackage 2: Describing the context of social care for older people using quantitative social care and demographic data.
    • Workpackage 3: Mathematical modelling: what are the dynamics of COVID-19 transmission in domiciliary care, and what are the implications for prevention and support of the services?
    • Workpackage 4: Implementation and dissemination: this will operate throughout the study providing continuous feedback to relevant services and specific support by researchers for initiatives such as customised training and messaging to social care staff.

Workpackage 2 will provide context for the interpretation of Workpackage 1.
The mathematical modelling in Workpackage 3 will use estimates of parameters such as “how many clients does a care worker see in a day”. This will be inferred from various sources, including the datasets examined in Workpackage 2, and also data collected in Workpackage 1, which has included some questions for the purpose of providing this quantitative information.
