Research summary
The research question is “What supplements do women use preconceptually and in the first trimester of pregnancy"
Vitamins are vital compounds for growth and normal cell function. Pregnancy is a period of increasing demand for vitamins, sufficient levels are essential before and during pregnancy, yet intake of some vitamins during these periods are considered low in the UK. Evidence suggests folic acid supplements in preconception and the early stage of pregnancy reduce neural tube defects and other fetal anomalies. It is also suggested that certain supplements can reduce the chance of preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, and other pregnancy diseases.
Women who come for a dating pregnancy scan at Birmingham Women’s Hospital during the 6 week study period will be invited to take part. We will not recruit pregnant women below the age of 16 and those who do not have sufficient mental capacity to understand the study or questionnaire (severe learning difficulties).
Anonymous questionnaires will be handed out to all women who agree to take part.
Questionnaires will be analysed anonymously.REC name
