Research summary
Haemorrhoids (piles) are venous dilatations / congestion of the anal cushions. They are a common condition and approximately 20,000 interventions are performed per year for haemorrhoids in the UK. Haemorrhoid artery ligation is the preferred treatment option, usually performed under general anaesthesia, using an ultrasound probe in the rectum to identify the blood vessels supplying the haemorrhoids prior to surgical ligation. It is possible to permanently block these blood vessels using coil plugs placed via the arteries under under local anaesthesia. We propose that this will be tolerated much better than the surgical procedure and have similar or better outcomes.
