  • Research summary

It is important to involve parents from all different background in health research, however often parents from ethnic minority groups do not take part. A recent survey carried out by the National Institute for Health Research found that only 3% of the people who took part were from an Asian ethnic group, and only 2% were from a Black ethnic group. Also results from maternity research shows that women from minority ethnic backgrounds are more likely to lose their babies or die during or after their pregnancy compared to their White British women. It is therefore important to understand why parents from ethnic minority groups are reluctant to take part in research and what could be done to change this. \n\nThis study aims to explore barriers and facilitators in engaging under-represented expectant/ new mothers and fathers in research that involves the perinatal from pregnancy to one year after birth. \n\nThis study will gather insights from expectant and new parents from minority ethnic groups who are under-represented in research, to understand their views on what the barriers are, and what could be done to improve access to research participation. It is hoped that the findings from this project will provide valuable and practical lessons that can lead to the development of perinatal and child health research that is ‘culturally-sensitive’ and will serve the needs of all parents who are representative of our population, reducing the health inequalities.
