Research summary
Liver cirrhosis is a large burden on global health, causing over one million deaths per year. Observational studies have reported an inverse association between coffee and cirrhosis. The aim of this study is to compare the coffee consumption between healthy medical students and liver patients matched for severity, as means to estimate the at-risk consumption. This is single-centre observational, prospective, questionnaire-based study of chronic liver disease patient attending out-patient liver clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. In chronic liver disease patients, coffee consumption data will be obtained by a pre-designed questionnaire and medical information (routine investigations such as blood, radiology etc) will be garnered from the electronic patient notes on the TRAK® system. As control population, self-declared healthy volunteers in the medical school would be asked to fill similar pre-designed questionnaire.
We hope to demonstrate reduced coffee consumption in chronic liver disease patients compared to healthy control group. In addition, we speculate NAFLD patients consume relatively less coffee compared to other chronic liver disease.REC name
