Research summary
The Manchester Asthma and Allergy Study (MAAS) is a population based birth cohort, specifically designed to study risk factors for the development of asthma and allergies. Recruitment began in antenatal clinics at Wythenshawe and Stepping Hill Hospitals in 1995 and over a two year period over 1100 parents consented to their children being followed up from birth. Currently around 900 participants are under active follow up (aged 18-21 years).Clinical follow up to assess whether children have developed asthma or allergic disease is complete for age 1,3,5,8,11 and 16 years and is almost complete for age 18. Previous visits included parentally completed validated respiratory questionnaires (ISAAC) and clinical assessment of the children including skin prick testing and blood sampling. One unique facet of this cohort is the measurement of lung function from age 3 years using specific airways resistance. At age 5,8,11,16 and 18 years the participants have also been able to perform more complex lung function testing.
We are planning to carry out a detailed assessment of individuals within the MAAS cohort who have had or still have asthma symptoms, including lung function tests and nasal brushings to investigate predictors of and potential biomarkers of persistence of asthma into adulthood.REC name
